Malpractice requirements reminder if performing patient care

Posted 12 days ago by Vicky Stone-Gale

A question has recently been asked about volunteer status and malpractice. This is a reminder that all licensed APRN's are required to carry malpractice insurance if they are performing patient care. If you are volunteering as an APRNĀ  you are NOT exempt from this. The statute only exempts your practice to perform duties related to a teaching position. Once you go beyond that, you would need to have malpractice insurance. Please review F.S. 464.0123(2)(b) (autonomous APRN), which lists the exemptions from the malpractice requirements. This language mirrors the F.S. 456.048(2)(d), (non-autonomous) teaching APRN's. So if you are faculty and also practice in any capacity you must keep your insurance.
