BON clarification of FAQ guidance change for Autonomous APRN's on website

Posted about 2 years ago by Vicky Stone-Gale

As per Joe Baker, Executive Director for the Florida BON, there was a recent change in guidance regarding whether or not, once certified as an Autonomous APRN, one has to follow a protocol? The initial BON guidance under 'frequently asked questions' was that once certified as an autonomous APRN; protocols were no longer required. Recently, however, there was modification of this answer to state "Once registered as an Autonomous APRN, protocols are no longer required unless the Autonomous APRN has opted to also practice under the supervision of a physician or dentist or in a facility that requires it." This change was made because the BON has been getting many questions about this and they want to clarify that any facility can require an Autonomous APRN to have a protocol to work in their specific facility. This is similar to any facility not accepting APRN prescriptions for diagnostics, etc. or requiring physicians to co-sign charts.
